About the Munich Beer Festival
Following the model of the Munich Beer Festival, similar public
festivals have been established at almost 3,000 locations in around 100
countries. Among the largest are the Oktoberfest in Kitchener, Canada
which attracts about 700,000 visitors each year, and the Oktoberfest in
Blumenau, Brazil with around 600,000 visitors annually. There are even imitations of the Munich Beer Festival in Germany. Largest of them is the Hanover Oktoberfest with an annual tally of approximately 1 million visitors, making it the second biggest Oktoberfest worldwide.
The Cannstatt Volksfest, often deemed to be the second largest public festival in the world is, by contrast, no copy of the Oktoberfest but possesses its own unique history.
Because the Munich Beer Festival takes place on the Theresienwiese, it is known as the "Wiesn" in Upper Bavarian dialect. "Wiesn" has the feminine gender ("die Wiesn", or in Upper Bavarian "de Wiesn" abbreviated to "d'Wiesn"). The noun is singular: there is only one festival ground, so you say "auf der Wiesn" rather than "auf den Wiesn".
The word is very often written incorrectly as "Wies'n", signifying the plural of the High German word "Wiesen" ('several meadows', the apostrophe replacing the second letter 'e').
During the Munich Beer Festival, the Theresienwiese is also sometimes referred to using the High German word "Festwiese": on public transport signs specially erected during the festival, for example.
